2023 Shore Lines Writing Festival

Shore Lines is an annual competition and festival providing a unique opportunity for writers to present their work to a live audience. Winners will be announced and a selection of shortlisted entries will be performed at the Shore Lines Writing for Performance event on Saturday 21 October 2023 at the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre.

Shore Lines is an annual competition and festival providing a unique opportunity for writers to present their work to a live audience.

If you enjoy writing and would like your work performed, then Shore Lines is for you. The competition calls for written entries that will be judged on the quality of the writing and their suitability for performance. We encourage a wide range of genres including monologues, poems, plays, stories, comedy, songs, hip hop or rap.

Winners will be announced and a selection of shortlisted entries will be performed at the Shore Lines Writing for Performance event on Saturday 21 October 2023 at the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre.

CATEGORIES AND PRIZES TO THE VALUE OF:

 

Open: for all writers

1st place: $ 500

2nd place: $ 250

Highly commended

Secondary school students (18 and under)

1st place: $ 300

2nd place: $ 150

Highly commended

Primary school students

1st place: $ 100

2nd place: $ 50

​

LENGTH OF PERFORMANCE

  • Prose pieces (maximum 5 minutes)

  • Stand-up comedy (maximum 5 minutes)

  • Monologues/One act plays (maximum 15 minutes in length; staging notes to accompany script)

  • Poetry (maximum 5 minutes)

  • Speeches (maximum 5 minutes)

  • Song lyrics and hip hop (maximum 5 minutes; genre or style of music to accompany script)

  • Other – please specify on entry form (maximum 15 minutes)

Conditions of entry

1. Entries which do not comply with conditions of entry may be disqualified.

2. Entry is free.

​

3. Any piece written with the intention of being performed will be accepted.

​

4. Maximum two pieces per person.

​

5. All entries must be the author’s original work. Pieces should not have received an award or been published or performed prior to the Shore Lines performance event on 21 October 2023 (with the exception of the Shore Lines open mic event on 5 May).

6. An electronic version of each entry should be sent to shorelinesbunbury@gmail.com OR two printed copies sent to Shore Lines Competition, 4/136 Spencer Street, Bunbury 6230. Printed copies must bear a postmark dated before 17 July, 2023.

​

7. To ensure anonymity, no writer’s name is to appear on the manuscripts. Please attach a Shore Lines Entry Form with entrant’s contact details to each piece submitted.

​

8. All entries are to be typed and 1.5 or double-spaced.

​

9. Include a header or footer with the title on each page, and pages numbered like so:

1 of 6; 2 of 3; etc. indicating the number of the page and the total number of pages in the piece.

10. At the end of the work, note THE END.

​

11. Pieces will not be returned so ensure you have a copy.

​

12. Shortlisted entrants will be advised at the conclusion of judging and invited to perform themselves or be responsible for arranging performance of their piece at the event on Saturday 21 October.

13. The independent judging panel’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

​

14. All work remains the property of Shore Lines until the conclusion of the performance event. Shore Lines reserves the right to use work for promotional purposes.

15. Please detail technical requirements/specifications/stage directions on each entry. Shore Lines, in partnership with Stark Raven Theatre Company, may offer assistance with technical requirements.

​

16. Late entries will not be accepted.

​

17. Shore Lines respects the privacy of your personal information. Information requested on the entry form will be used for the purpose of the writing competition and only to communicate event information with you.

​

18. Collaborative works will be accepted. Please provide names of all writers, one of whom should be the nominated contact person.

​

The Writing Competition opens 5 May 2023 and closes 17 July 2023.
